File Server Consolidation (Same Domain)

Learn how to consolidate multiple source file servers on a single target server and how to resolve folder, share and group name conflicts with CopyRight2.

File Server Consolidation (Same Domain)

In this video you can see how to consolidate multiple source file servers onto a single target file server. It shows how to resolve folder, share name and local group name conflicts using CopyRight2's unique name prefix/suffix solution.

Video

Environment

The two source and the target server are configured as member servers in the same domain. The software is installed and run on the target system, pulling the data. The source servers are running Windows® 2008 R2 and the target Windows® 2019. If newer Windows versions were used, or if running it on the source side, the same settings could be used.

On each of the two source member servers, there is a "Sales" group share folder, shared as "Sales$" and a local group controlling access to the data. The local group contains accounts from the domain. The users accessing each department servers data are not the same users.

Additionally there are home shares located below each departments servers "C:\Home" folder. Each home share folder is configured as hidden share, having the user account name as name. Each department has 4 users. The home shares shall all get consolidated into folders below the "C:\Home" folder of the target server.

The data of both servers has to get consolidated onto the single target server, requiring the naming conflicts of the folder, the file share and the local group to get resolved, to prevent users from gaining access to data that they did not have access to before the migration.

Notes

The settings used assume that no users are working while the migration takes place. If you want to use an approach with multiple passes (pre-copy/final copy) you additionally have to enable the "Ignore errors resulting from locked files" ("Error Processing" page) option for the pre-copy pass(es) to prevent errors from occurring because of locked files.
